One of the things you need to take into consideration is the size of ubuntu’s default install and the size of your flash media. My suggestion is something about close to 7-8gigs to be comfortable but I think a 4gig flash drive should suffice if you plan to use something like a persistant live cd, I suggest 7-8 as we are going to do a full install of Ubuntu 9.04.

Step 2: Loading your cd in live mode first
I suggest this first as it will allow you to access tools the install environment would give you. once loaded go to

  System->Administration->Partition Editor

Select your drive you want to install ubuntu on (in my case it was an external Hard drive about 80gigs) and format at least 80% of your hard drive as ext4 with the mount point as / and the rest format it as a linux swap patition.

Step 3: Installing Ubuntu (finally)
now that we partitioned our flash media it’s time to install ubuntu. Double click on the install icon and follow the instructions, select your flash media to install it on and then when it comes to review the installations click on advance on the last page and select /dev/hda (all depending what ubuntu classifies your flash drive as) and this will install grub right on your flash drive and not on your computers hard drive.

Step 4: Testing it out
now once installed reboot your computer and select it to boot from a usb drive and you should see grub load

There you have it folks Ubuntu installed on a removable storage device. Eventually I’ll add some screenshots of the process to show you guys

I found this neat tool that allows you to update Linux Operating systems that are running dialup or have limited bandwidth and it’s called keryx, now you all may be saying what the heck is he talk about a linux tool when this site covers mostly windows?, well folks this tool runs in windows too .

what it does is that it pulls updates from your (at this moment it’s just debian based operating systems) *nix computer and produces a list with where to download the updates where you can take that to another computer thats lets say running windows and get the updates there. (still confused? think it’s still a linux only tool?) Well keryx always has a windows binary that does the downloading of the updates for you and there is also in the makings a windows update plugin for it and even one for PortableApps.com.

I have below a screenshot (thanks to the developer excid3 of keryx for the screenshot)

This app will hopefully revolutionize for dialup users on how they update their computer so that they can stay up to date with the latest security updates for their operating system.

My suggestion is to try them out or send them a donation so that they can continue development of keryx (which can be found on their project site).

Also another note, I heard from excid3 that he is going to GSoC (Google Summer of Code) we congratulate him on the acceptance and hope he succeeds well when he is there.

Howdy all, While browsing lifehacker.com I found a neat program called DropBox, it’s a tool that allows you to syncronize your files to another place, now the information I found is about a wrapper for DropBox making it portable.

This is what lifehacker.com has to say about this portable application

Windows only: Free application DropboxPortable makes the popular file-syncing application thumb-drive friendly, so you can access your synced bucket from your thumb drive no matter what computer you’re using. It’s great that Dropbox allows you to access a synced bucket of files on your several computers so you know you’re always working with the latest and greatest, but if you’re using a computer where you can’t install Dropbox permanently, this portable version lets you enjoy the benefits without hassling with Dropbox’s web-based access, where the process of editing and syncing files is much more clumsy. The application isn’t perfect, and requires an attentive installation process, but if you can get it up and running, it’s a great option for getting more from Dropbox.

now you can also find more information at the DropBoxPortable post at the dropbox forums

Hey guys, New release of the PortableApps.com Suite is now here, found below is some information about the update *note this was borrowed from PortableApps.com

PortableApps.com Platform

The PortableApps.com Platform 1.5 release adds lots of new features including:

New Theme - The PortableApps.com Menu has a greatly improved display engine and a slick new theme to go along with it. It’s PNG based allowing transparent hovers on buttons and other great looking extras. And the next release of the platform in 2 weeks will let you theme it yourself.

App Icon Renaming - Now you can rename all your apps so they appear just as you like.

App Icon Hiding - You can easily hide icons right from the menu. This is especially useful when you add apps that aren’t in PortableApps.com Format (Did you know the PortableApps.com Platform works with all portable apps?).

Better Multilingual Support

  - The Platform now supports 37 languages and has a 55 langauge installer making it easy for everyone to install and use.

App Language Switching - When you switch languages in the menu and then launch one of our multilingual apps like Pidgin, GIMP, Notepad++, VLC and others, the app will automatically come up in the language the menu is set to. This way, you don’t have to hunt around in an app to figure out how to change its language. (Of course, the app has to support your chosen language for this to work properly.)

Improved Wallpaper Swapper - The built in wallpaper swapper now supports widescreen and standard wallpapers and will automatically use the best one for the PC you’re on.

Run As (Admin) - You can now run individual applications as an admin or other user directly within the menu.

Hide Desktop Icons - You can optionally have the platform hide the PC’s desktop icons while it’s running, giving you a cleaner desktop.

Transparency - The menu supports a new transparency setting to give it a glassy effect and see the desktop below it.

App Details on Hover - When you hover over an app’s icon, you can see all the details of the app. Now you don’t have to start it up to remember what version you have installed.

all I have to say is that if you used the old suite it’s time to update and if you haven’t before you should definetly try this suite out

The primary function here is, of course, storage, with 40GB, 80GB, and 120GB options available to suit daily data diet. The multitude of other functions begins and ends with how you get all that data onto the drive, with not only a regular USB 2.0 interface at your disposal, but a built-in memory card reader to accommodate all your standard memory card formats as well. It’s not clear how much it’ll cost yet, but TEAC says the the 40GB model will be available December 1st, with the 80GB and 120GB drives to follow at a later, unspecified date
